Colombia and France made a treaty in the 1880's for the construction of a canal across panama's narrow isthmus.Due to yellow
fever the lives of more then 22,000 workers were lost threw out a five year period which halted construction. Later although
Colombia had objections and a french investor negotiated a deal with the united states to construct the canal.This was vital
for the tactical and financial assistance during the time of panama's independence.The United States in 1903(Panama's declaration
of independence) agreed to protect the new government in return for constructing a canal . This began Theodore Roosevelts"The
Panama Doctrine" which called for the eradication of mosquitoes which were carriers of yellow fever and malaria. The completion
of the canal in 1914 opened a very important shippin route still used today(2007) Also during WWII the canal became one of
americas most valuable strategic assets.

adopted into panama are golf, olympics, tennis, baseball and recently added football which makes it a total of five.The best
